More About Oil on Copper

Painting on copper dates back to the mid-sixteenth century and remained

popular through the mid-eighteenth century, often being used in religious or

spiritual subject matter. Masters including Jan Breughel the Elder, Claude,

El Greco, Reni, Guercino, Rembrandt, and Vernet are among those who

produced fine works on copper.

Art scholars and historians have often discussed the techniques used by these

masters, but most seem to agree the reasons and techniques for painting on copper

seem as varied as the artists who've chosen to use this luminous surface.

In most of these works on copper, some of the copper is intentionally exposed,

or revealed through a light glaze, allowing the brilliance of the copper to become

an integral part of the painting.
